SOS Entity Registration

Formalize your LLC ($200 minimum) or Corporation via the Alabama Secretary of State. Note that for LLCs, the Certificate of Formation must be filed with the SOS, and an Initial Business Privilege Tax return is due within 2.5 months of formation.

My Alabama Taxes (MAT)

Register for Sales Tax (4.0% state base) and Withholding via the MAT portal. For 2026, the Corporate Income Tax rate is stable at 6.5%. Alabama uses a centralized system for both state and most local tax filings.

Local Licensing & BPT

Most Alabama municipalities require a City Business License. Additionally, all entities must file the annual Business Privilege Tax (BPT) return. Even if your tax liability is $0, the form must be filed by April 15th.

April 15th Tax Deadline

Most corporate and individual income tax returns, as well as the annual Business Privilege Tax, are due by April 15, 2026. Late filing of the BPT triggers a minimum $50 penalty or 10% of the tax due.

Employer standards are managed by the Alabama Department of Labor (ADOL):

Unemployment Tax (eGov)

Employers must register for UI tax via the ADOL eGov portal. For 2026, the taxable wage base is $8,000. New employers typically start with a 2.7% tax rate until an experience rating is established.

Workers' Comp (WCC)

Mandatory for all employers with 5 or more employees (including part-time). For the construction industry, the requirement starts at 1 or more employees. Coverage is secured through private carriers.

Alabama New Hire Reporting

All Alabama employers must report new or rehired employees within 20 days of the start date to the Alabama New Hire Reporting Center to support state child support and labor programs.
